    About the Role :

    Swiss Re's Reinsurance Contracts function seeks a Contracts Counsel to join our team supporting its reinsurance business in the Latin America region.

    Primary responsibilities are drafting and review of Life, Health, Property and Casualty contract wordings, advising on contract related matters and engaging with internal and, at times, external clients concerning the terms of reinsurance contracts.

    This position will be based in Mexico City, Mexico.

    Core responsibilities of the Contracts Counsel are :

  • Independently produce and critique reinsurance contracts, binders, slips, endorsements and related documents, aligning written agreements with business intent and requirements
  • Advise, guide and steer various corporate functions regarding contract interpretation, application and best practices relating to routine as well as complex matters for all lines of business across Latin America (Mexico, Central and South America)
  • Align reinsurance contracts with applicable law, regulations and internal requirements
  • Coordinate and communicate corporate policies on contract related matters
  • Maintain strong governance risk and control standards with respect to contract wordings and processes
  • Collaborate with internal partners, including Client Managers, Business Services, Claims, Technical Accounting, Actuarial, Legal, and Underwriting, in product development, negotiations and training
  • Support development and implementation of guidelines and processes and cooperative across functions to maintain existing (and develop new) tools, systems, and processes
  • The Contracts Counsel will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of relevant law, regulations and market practices in the Latin America region and apply these to reinsurance agreements.

    They will also require strong analytical abilities and excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage confidently and with impact with colleagues in other functions and to negotiate effectively with external clients.

    We are seeking a candidate with a pragmatic, results-oriented mindset and a continuous improvement mentality, who possesses the ability to work independently with a sense of personal responsibility and accountability, while also listening and building cooperative relationships with internal and external partners.

    About You :

  • Law degree or significant professional experience with reinsurance or insurance agreements;
  • Two or more years of (re)insurance industry experience as an attorney or related reinsurance experience such as a contract / policy specialist or claims handling role;
  • Solid understanding of (re)insurance products and the Latin America (re)insurance market, risks, processes, controls and governance;
  • experience working with both Life / Health and Property / Casualty products preferred;
  • Quick learner, able to work and manage time independently, productively and efficiently; and
  • High-level fluency in Spanish and English, including business terminology, with additional fluency in Portuguese a plus.
